There were also further sub-camps in the region. As the war turned against the Germans, the Nazis set up more and more forced labour camps in an attempt to keep their war effort going. So desperate were they for labour that they kept prisoners alive for as long as possible. Without this necessity, many more would have been murdered. A typical example of a forced labour camp was Plaszow near Krakow. The commandant was Amon Goeth, played chillingly well by Ralph Fiennes in Steven Spielberg’s Holocaust masterpiece Schindler’s List. At the end of the war, Goeth was hanged by the Russians.

Almost three of the six million victims of the Holocaust died in the Polish extermination camps. Most of them were Jews.

Auschwitz-Birkenau: 1.1 million

Belzec: 434,000

Janowska: 40,000

Majdanek: 78,000

Sobibor: 200,000

Treblinka: 870,000
